Tanka: The Art of Appliqué
Appliqué is the process of sewing smaller pieces of fabric onto a larger background fabric, creating a single cohesive pattern with different pieces of cloth. This technique is both decorative and functional, layering fabric to form intricate designs.
Tanka, meaning "to stitch" in Hindi, is a collection that reimagines the timeless craft of appliqué. It is a tribute to the meticulous artistry of layering and stitching fabric to create stunning motifs. Rooted in tradition yet reinterpreted for contemporary aesthetics, Tanka embraces delicate flora, fauna, and geometric borders, giving heritage motifs a modern twist.
Materials & Preparation
The primary material for appliqué is cloth. Traditionally, cotton has been the preferred fabric, and it continues to be widely used. Voile is also incorporated to lend a more refined and delicate touch. Multi-colored threads and fabric swatches are selected based on the design requirements.
Before the appliqué process begins, the background fabric is carefully cut and prepared for stitching. In some cases, this background is pieced together from various geometric fabric swatches (squares, rectangles, and other shapes) before the appliqué work is applied.
The Appliqué Process
Design Transfer: Once the design is finalized, it is transferred onto a large piece of tracing paper. The design is outlined by piercing small holes along the lines, and water-erasable ink is used to imprint the design onto the fabric.
Fabric Preparation: The chosen fabric pieces are placed on the background fabric and temporarily adhered with glue for stability.
Cutting the Shapes: When cutting the fabric, a 1/8” to 1/4” allowance is left around the drawn lines to enable seamless folding.
Stitching: Using a blind stitch or appliqué stitch, the fabric pieces are carefully sewn onto the background fabric with matching thread. The process begins with the background elements, gradually layering the foreground pieces for depth and dimension.
Finishing Touches: Once the stitching is complete, extra threads are trimmed, and edges are smoothened to enhance the final look of the piece.
Design Aesthetics
Tanka celebrates a spectrum of color contrasts and tonal variations. Some designs incorporate contrasting fabric pieces to create striking visual impact, while others feature tone-on-tone techniques, such as the classic "white on white" style, which remains highly sought after. Each piece in the collection is a labor of love, honoring the craftsmanship of traditional appliqué while embracing modern elegance.
The Tanka collection is more than just fabric and stitches—it is a tribute to generations of artisans who have perfected this intricate technique, preserving and evolving the art of appliqué for years to come.
