Sambalpuri sarees are a major tribute to the traditional handlooms of Orissa. Unique in the making and exquisite in its designs, the Sambalpuri saree reflects an ancient handicraft called ‘bandha kala’.

The age-old Ikat weaving art, locally known as ‘bandha kala’, wherein the warp/weft is tied and dyed before weaving according to a preconceived design, has a broad reach and is a complicated, labor-intensive, and time-consuming process. The entire weaver family contributes to making every product, which takes an average of over a week to produce depending upon the intricacies of the design.

Process:
The 1st process involves placing and tying the yarns on a wooden frame to prevent inconsistency in the yarn.

The tying process involves a cluster of yarns tightly placed on a wooden frame, then marked according to the design. After the tying process is over the yarn is then dipped into different colors and as a result, the color penetrates into the united portions of the yarn.
Subsequently, the first set of knots are opened and then the tying and dying process is repeated to form different types of patterns and designs.
After all these processes the final weaving process begins on pit looms which is a laborious effort to produce a finished Pata saree from scratch."
