Chanderi is a traditional textile characterized by its lightweight, sheer texture and fine luxurious feel. Due to this, Chanderi sarees are referred to as 'wovenair'. Chanderi fabric is produced in the town of Chanderi, Madhya Pradesh by weaving in silk and golden Zari in the traditional cotton yarn that results in the creation of the shimmering texture.
• History
• It has been found that Chanderi weaves have been around since the 11th century. According to historical records, references in Indian mythology to the Vedic period suggest that Lord Krishna's cousin Shishupal introduced the Chanderi fabric.
• In the beginning, mostly Muslim weavers practised this craft. When Koshti weavers from Jhansi migrated to the town and settled down there in 1350, it moved to Chanderi. In the1 7th century, Chanderi was established as the hub of Chanderi weaves, when the Mughals established a karkhana dedicated to the craft until 1677 when Aurangzeb ordered to shut it down.
• When the royal family of India extended its patronage to the craft in 1910, Chanderi weaves were revived. Gold thread motifs were introduced to Chanderi weaving during this time.
• Speciality
• Creation of unique buttis or motifs and the transparent or sheer texture of Chanderi fabric are the two prime characteristics that distinguishes it from other handloom fabrics.
• The transparency of the fabric is because of the use of a single yarn for weaving Chanderi fabric.
• Material
• Cotton, Silk & Zari.
• Designs
• From traditional motifs of flowers, peacock, lotus to modern geometric patterns, today one can find strikingly beautiful motifs like 'Nalferma, 'Dandidar, 'Chatai',' Jangla', Mehndi wale haath' etc. adorning the Chanderi fabrics.
• Colors
• Color palette of Chanderi sarees are predominately ruled by soft pastel hues, however with changing times, vibrant combinations of red and black, turquoise and navy blue, fuchsia and white also exist.
