Story: Chhath Puja
The four day long festival is celebrated with pomp in
Bihar. Lord Surya and Chhathi Maiya are worshipped to
foster well being of humankind. It is celebrated twice in
a year, once on the sixth day after Diwali and then after
Holi.
Be it Surya Putra Karan, Draupadi and the Pandavas or
the sages and rishis, the origin of Chhath Puja has many
stories associated with it.
Over the four days, the devotees take a dip in the holy
river, fast without water for 36 hours, prepare prasad and
offer it to the sun. On the last day, they break their fast
with prasad made of rice, wheat, dry fruits, nuts, jaggery,
fruits, and ghee. The whole family returns home with the
prasad being carried by a male member of the family. No
one is supposed to cross the person carrying the prasad
as it is not considered auspicious.
